The New Year is finally upon us and we're all hoping 2021 is better than the last. And even though pubs and bars around the country currently have restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, that won't stop Brits from making the most of the celebration.

While we don’t condone drinking so much that it will cause you a hangover, there’s no doubt that a few tipples on new year’s Eve will have left some of us feeling slightly worse for wear. So what really cures a hangover? Although we know the best way to avoid it, is to limit how much alcohol you're consuming, there are other ways to help lessen the pounding headache and speed up your hangover recovery.

Nutritionist Amanda Callenberg has shared a few tips and tricks to help you see it through. She said: "Alcohol contains ethanol, which is a toxic chemical that needs to be broken down by the liver before it can be safely eliminated from the body. It is also a diuretic, which means it helps our body to get rid of fluids. When we become severely dehydrated our bodies can’t remove these toxins, so they stay circulating in our bodies.”

“It is this dehydration that causes the classic hangover symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting. To prevent a hangover in the morning, drink plenty of water, before, during and the day after drinking to keep yourself well hydrated. Aim to drink a glass of water between drinks and have at least one big glass of water before going to sleep."

Eat before you go out

Eating before drinking is key. But we're not talking about something greasy or deep-fat fried - you need a balanced meal before you go out, one that includes fat, protein, and carbohydrates. This will help slow down the absorption of alcohol.

Stay hydrated

Now we already know about this one, but drinking water - and plenty of it - is key to surviving a hangover. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes higher levels of urination leading to dehydration. You should be drinking water before you go out and the morning after to keep yourself hydrated. Place a bottle of water on your bedside table before you go out - you'll thank yourself the next morning when you've got a dry tongue.
