Netflix's reality TV series Young, Famous & African has bagged its first International nomination in the 11th annual National Reality TV Awards (NRTA) in the United Kingdom.

According to their official website, NRTA received over 5.7 million submissions for this year's nomination, and the winners will be crowned on July 28th, 2022, at the Porchester Hall in London.

The made-in-Africa TV show, which features a group of music and showbiz celebrities from around Africa, was nominated in the Best International Show Category.

Other hit TV series in the same category include Too Hot to Handle, Below Deck, Love is Blind, Selling Sunset, The Ultimatum – Marry or Move on, I Am Georgina and Is it Cake?

Young, Famous & African had viewers glued to their screens around the continent, showcasing classy lifestyles that are a far cry from the stereotypical images of African hardship.

The show ranked number one in Africa in its first week of release in March and stayed in the top 10 for four weeks in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Speaking to Reuters, Ugandan businesswoman and socialite Zari Hassan, popularly known as "Zari the Boss Lady," said that most people have a misconception of what Africa is.

"Why is it that it's only in the States or Europe where we're supposed to be seeing the money, the private jets, the Ferraris and everything? We have these things in Africa. This is the new Africa. This is the modern Africa," Zari told Reuters.

South African actress Khanyi Mbau, who features in the series, said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the media presented Africa as a continent in a bad place and lacking vaccines, adding that the show came at the right time.

"If you look at the world, our music, our fashion, it has filtered through to European countries, the Americans love what we do. So this show is actually to show us that we are truly the motherland. We are the sound, we are the tone," she said while speaking on the red carpet at The Real Housewives of Lagos launch event.
