Former Citizen TV news anchor and media personality Hussein Mohamed was among the top trends for the better part of Tuesday morning following his response to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

While speaking during a Universal Health Care function attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Mombasa on Monday, Atwoli told the gathering that those close to DP William Ruto should ensure they cut all trees in Sugoi after the election results are announced because the ‘young man’ will hang himself.

Hussein, who is currently the Director of Communications in Ruto’s campaign team, termed the remarks ‘reckless and unnecessary’ adding that they go against the tenets of democracy.

“The remarks by their ‘ancient campaign expert’ Francis Atwoli are completely unnecessary and go against the tenets of democracy.

“For Kenyans inflicted with violence and death including in the context of elections, this is not a laughing matter,” read a statement by the DP’s campaign team issued by Hussein.

They maintained that using suicide as humor at a function attended by several high-profile guests is a demonstration of ‘how far elites are from the realities and struggles of the Kenyan hustler.’

UDA further urged ‘Team Azimio’ to assure that they will not cause violence in case they lose the presidential contest and they should make that promise to Kenyans.

“No one should seek to qualify answers on violence or cheap attempts to create crude humor,” read the statement.

Hussein was appointed Head of Communications in DP Ruto’s presidential campaign in late January and the DP officially welcomed him through a tweet.

“Renowned TV journalist has been appointed Head of Communications in the William Ruto Presidential Campaign. Welcome to the Hustler team,” DP Ruto wrote on his Twitter.

Hussein quit TV in October 2019 after a stellar career spanning close to 10 years to concentrate on "other matters".

Before his resignation, Mohamed hosted a number of TV shows, where he mostly interviewed politicians.

He has interviewed President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ruto, and ODM leader Raila Odinga among other top politicians in the country.
