Vihiga Senator George Khaniri could have his properties auctioned over a Sh7 million loan he took from a financial institution in Nairobi.

Khaniri, an MP since 1998, borrowed the money to sort out ‘desperate personal issues’ and placed his certificate of lease number Block 82/7303 as security for the loan.

The former assistant minister for Information and Communication in 2008, took the loan on November 9, 2016, and part of what mheshimiwa signed reads that, “...subject to terms and conditions of this agreement, the lender agrees to advance to the borrower a loan of Sh7,000,000 repayable within two months at 10 per cent interest.”

The father of four indicated in his loan application forms that he was divorced and named his son as next of kin.

A city lawyer acted as witness and swore an affidavit to that effect. The non-payment of the loan has led to the auctioneers attaching his flat and putting it up for auction.

In a newspaper advert in one of the local dailies dated July 14, 2016, Khaniri’s property was advertised as ‘prime residential property in Donholm Phase 8, Nairobi County.’

The auction notice further reads that, “We have been duly instructed by our principals, the chargees, in exercise of statutory powers of sale, we shall sell by public auction the property described herein together with all developments erected thereon 25 July 2017, registered in the name of George Munyasa Khaniri.

The property is situated in Donholm Phase 8 residential area and on the property, stands one residential block of flats with nine 2-bedroom apartments and five one-bedroom residential apartments generating a rental income of Sh255,000 per month. Water and electricity services are connected.”

Khaniri, who is one of the long-serving lawmakers from Western Kenya attended Jersey State University in the USA, but dropped out upon his father’s death in 1996 when he ran for the Hamisi parliamentary seat.

Efforts to reach Khaniri bore no fruits as he neither picked our calls nor responded to text messages.
