Migori gubernatorial hopeful Ochilo Ayacko declined Mwai Kibaki’s offer for the position of minister for Local Government because ODM leader Raila Odinga advised him so.
“After consulting Raila, he told me that voting ‘No’ and opting for the referendum bore more benefit for the people of Kenya and carried better things for my marginalised region and so I turned down Kibaki and was stripped of the flag,” the former Rongo MP told ODM delegates of Suna West.
He added that the Ministry of local government was one of the most lucrative dockets. After he turned down the offer, he was sacked a day later, “as a sacrifice to the people.”
President Kibaki made history in 2005 when he fired his entire Cabinet including Raila Odinga as Roads Minister, Kalonzo Musyoka (Environment), Prof Anyang Nyong’o (Planning), Ayacko as the then Sports Minister among others, a day after losing the referendum.
The former Energy and Nuclear CEO said he is one of those who fought for devolution under the captainship of Odinga and thus understands how it works.
