Felix Kiprono filed a petition to compel the Registrar of Persons register Obama as a Kenyan citizen.

The lawyer argued that since the US president has a Kenyan father, it was only proper to register him as a citizen and issue him with an identification card.

“Even the Constitution is clear that one ought to be registered as a citizen of a country if one’s parents hail from that country,” argued Kiprono.

The timing of the petition would coincide with Obama’s planned visit to attend the Global Entrepreneur Summit, an annual conference that connects entrepreneurs with business leaders, international organisations and governments.

Kiprono is the lawyer who had earlier surprised the world with the odd request to the First Family for their daughter Malia’s hand in marriage. The lawyer had promised to pay 50 cows, 70 sheep and 30 goats as bride price in June.

According to the Kenya Citzenship and Immigration Act, a person born outside Kenya shall be a citizen by birth if on the date of birth that person’s mother or father was or is a citizen by birth.

Should Obama receive an identity card, which is most unlikely anyway, he will have the right to be registered as a voter and could freely participate in elections, including voting andvying for any elective post.
