Popular Tanzanian actor and comedian Idris Sultan has been acquitted alongside his co-accused Innocent Maiga by Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court following months of court battle.

According to The Citizen Tanzania, the 28-year-old actor who also doubles up as a radio host was freed after the prosecution failed to present witnesses in court since February 2021.

According to reports, the case had been scheduled for May 14, 2021, which was a public holiday. However, in his verdict, Judge Chaungu said, on February 22, 2021, he gave a final adjournment to the case due to the prosecution not having a witness.

“Also, on April 29, 2021, I issued another adjournment after prosecution failed to bring the witness to the court, and today the prosecution has failed to bring the witness to court,” he said.

The Citizen Tanzania further reports that Sultan and Maiga are accused of committing offenses against the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). In the first indictment, against Sultan, it is alleged that between December 23, 2019 and May 19, 2020 in Mbezi Beach area Tanzania, he illegally failed to register a sim card that was owned by someone else.

It is further alleged that Idris used a simcard owned by Innocent Maiga without reporting to the licensor - TCRA.

In the second indictment, against Maiga, it is claimed that the same day and place, Maiga being the rightful owner of the sim card, failed to report the change of telephone number as used by Idris Sultan, which is illegal.

However, shortly after Idris and Maiga, were released by the Court, local reports say that they were re-arrested by police officers and taken to Oysterbay Police Station.

This comes barely a month after former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete sent a public message to the comedian. In his message, President Kikwete was congratulating Idris on his major career milestone when it emerged that he (Idris) was the first Tanzanian actor to appear on Netflix.

“I spared some time to watch #SlayMovieOnNetflix and I was delighted to see @IdrisSultan featuring in it. I congratulate him for being the first Tanzanian to feature on #Netflix and looking forward to seeing more of him in the future,” the former head of state said in a tweet.
