James Blunt's stalker demanded 'You're Beautiful' royalties as track topped charts

James Blunt has lifted the lid on the darker - and downright bizarre - side of fame. The former army officer burst onto the scene in 2005 with mega-hit You're Beautiful, which seized the number one spot in 11 countries around the globe and cemented James' superstar status.

He even performed the song at Sir Elton John and David Furnish's civil ceremony that same year. James has since recounted seeing his ex-girlfriend on the subway with another man, providing the heartbroken inspiration for the lyrics. But a superfan-turned-stalker was convinced the track had been penned about her, alleging James had been the one stalking her after laying eyes on her in 1984.

James recalled to The Sun: "It was quite scary. She's pretty fervent that she's the woman for me from the subway. She sent me a detailed 50-page document about how I've been stalking her, and that's a little frightening. "And because she is such a fan, we have met at different stages, at various gigs or whatever."

But James had a clear solution to his stalker's claim, reasoning that she claimed he had seen her on the train in the States in 1984, when he would have been 10 years old. And the first time he visited the US was in 2002. No further legal action was taken after James proved the song had not been written about her.

"I have had a few stalkers but I don't feel like I always have to talk about them because I have been given wonderful gifts from them," he added fondly. James has these days carved out a niche as a Twitter funnyman, crafting scathingly witty retorts to disparaging reviews of his music. He's also written a book, How To Be A Complete And Utter Blunt, a nod to his Twitter alter ego. One tweeter reckoned: "Don't know if I can imagine much worse than James Blunt's new album."

James came back: "Kids these days have no imagination." Another sent: "Why does James Blunt sing like his willy is being stood on?" James retorted: "Damn thing's always getting caught under my feet." He's also a pub-owner, having bought west London spot The Fox and Pheasant. "I'm being beaten on two sides, because I've got music and a pub - I've definitely got the wrong businesses!" James laughed, referencing the new lockdown restrictions.
