Fast-rising Tanzanian entertainer Pierre Konki Liquid is eying a parliamentary seat in the country's October 2020 general elections.
Speaking to Global TV, Liquid disclosed that he plans to run on a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket to unseat the current Iringa Town MP, Peter Msigwa.
Popular and currently stationed in Dar es Salaam, Liquid noted that the bustling legislative area in the southern highlands of Tanzania is his hometown.
“Mimi natangaza nia ya kwenda kugombea jimbo la Iringa Mjini. Mimi kule ndio maeneo ya kwetu kule ndiko alikozaliwa mama, Mchungaji Msigwa anatoka pale,” said Piere Liquid.
Asked if he has what it takes as a first-timer against the veteran Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) heavyweight who has represented Iringa Town constituency since 2010, Liquid exuded confidence that he will be victorious.
“Nakwambia, naeleza na itakuwa. Anatoka pale,” added the comedian. “Mimi nitaenda (Iringa) kuwauliza - muda huu wote mumefanyiwa nini kikubwa? Yeye ni mchungaji mimi ni mtumishi. Kwa hio tutapambana pale kuhakikisha Iringa tunaiweka sawa.”
The bold move by the comic follows a similar call to serve that singer Rajab Abdul Kahali alias Harmonize, among other Bongo celebrities, has reportedly heeded to.
Harmonize whose close ties and open support for President John Pombe Magufuli is no secret, is said to be considering a nod from several CCM quarters to vie for Tandahimba's parliamentary seat.
Speaking after Harmonize’s stellar performance at a public event he graced in Ruangwa, Lindi on October 15, 2019, President Magufuli expressed his desire for the artist to take the step.
“Lakumalizia… nawapongeza sana waimbaji hawa wakina baba, lakini nampongeza sana Harmonize. Sijui anatoka jimbo gani? Tandahimba? Mbunge wa kule ni nani? Aaa ningetamani kweli Harmonize akagombee kule akawe mbunge wa Tandahimba,” said Magufuli.
That, was 2019. The singer five months ago posted on his Instagram account a congratulatory message that hinted on his October candidature.
"Asante Sanaa....Mheshimiwa DC Tandahimba nakuombea Mungu nikukute katika Madaraka Ili tuisongeshe Tandahimba mbali zaidi! Yani sitamani upate Uhamisho Ili kwa pamoja tuitumikie Tandahimba kuanzia mwaka 2020 inshallah," he wrote.
Located on the coast of south-eastern Tanzania in Mtwara, Tandahimba’s seat has since 2015 been firmly held by Katani Ahmad Katani of Civic United Front (CUF).
