Protesting Kisii residents demand sacking of CS Matiang’i

Police used tear gas to disperse protesting residents demanding the sacking of Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i over what they described as growing police brutality.

The protesters, chanting anti-Jubilee slogans, were angered by Monday's attack on Kisii County Woman Representative Janet Ong'era's car during anti-IEBC demonstrations in Nairobi.

Police broke the windscreen of Ms Ong'era's vehicle after firing teargas canisters at her convoy.

The demonstrators disrupted business in Kisii town, accusing Dr Matiang'i of allowing police to use excessive force on Ong'era and other NASA MPs during the demonstrations.

The protesters accused Matiang’i for the alleged excessive use of police force on Ms Ongera and other Nasa  MPs during the Nairobi demonstrations.

The youths had to scamper for safety after police officers lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse them.

Youth ODM supporter Denis Mosoti said they were out to protest the harassment of opposition MPs and supporters expressing their constitutional rights through public demonstrations.

“Matiangi should tell our police officers to respect our leaders.  What they have been doing is a violation of basic human rights,” he said.

They threatened to rally on their colleagues not to participate in the repeat presidential poll until the reforms advocated by NASA are met.

"We are holding peaceful protests and there was no need for security agents to use excessive force on us," he said.
