Government allocates Sh3.5 billion for co-curricular activities

The Government will spend Sh3.5 billion on co-curriculum activities in public primary and secondary schools this year.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said Sh2.8 billion would be channelled to secondary schools while primary schools will get Sh700 million for sports among other co-curriculum activities.

The PS was speaking at Hill School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, at the closing ceremony of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association term two ball games on Sunday. The event ran for a week.

“Sporting activities help to instill right values among learners and that is why as a Government, we will endeavour to commit more resources to co-curricular activities in our public schools across the country,” said Kipsang.

National Assembly Chief Whip Benjamin Washiali and a host of senior Ministry of Education officials from the national and county governments were also present.

The students, Kipsang said, should not only excel in academic work but also be allowed to develop their talent in various disciplines in sports.

“I am challenging tutors to ensure they follow up on their learners' talents in areas of sports, music and drama before they complete school instead of leaving them to waste away,” he said.
