TSC to meet teachers over appraisals and performance contracts

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will from Monday meet teachers over performance contracting and appraisals.

A TSC internal memo seen by The Standard indicates that the meetings will run up to Friday next week.

"This is to inform you that  (the) commission shall carry out a sensitisation programme for stakeholders on the performance contracts and performance appraisals with effect from February 22 to 26," the memo signed by acting Commission Secretary Simon Kavisi partly read.

This comes amid strike fears after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) issued a seven-day strike notice over the matter.

In a letter dated February 16 and addressed to Labour Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie, Knut said a nationwide strike would begin after the notice lapsed if the ministry failed to intervene to stop the performance contracts and appraisals process.

"In the absence of your intervention...we shall commence the process of industrial action in accordance with members direction," Knut said.
