Education Ministry to revise curriculum for primary and secondary schools

The Ministry of Education plans to undertake a compressive curriculum reform in primary and secondary education in the 2015/2016 financial year.

The Ministry has outlined a series of activities to be undertaken in delivering the envisaged curriculum by the end of June, 2016.

Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Education Dr. Belio Kipsang met the UNICEF Chief for Kenya Dr. Daniel Beheta on Friday to review the plan of action that will guide the whole process. In attendance was Senior Deputy Director of Education Mr. Darius Ogutu Mogaka.

UNICEF is providing financial and technical support for the process.

The last time comprehensive curriculum reform was carried out was 1985. The ensuing curriculum incorporated technical and vocational education and training and it ushered in the current 8.4.4 system of education.

Several revises of the curriculum undertaken since then have only addressed issues of the curriculum content without addressing the fundamental issues and values that would transform society by enhancing productivity of every citizen.

The proclamation of the Kenyan Constitution 2010, other policy initiatives and changes the Government has undertaken has made it necessary to reform the Curriculum to accord with the goals, values and other objectives of the nation.

There is also need for seamless transition of all children from one level to the next through creation of different pathways—academic vocational and talent.
