Police in Athi River are holding two women arrested in Mlolongo, Machakos county in a botched attempt to sell a two-week-old baby for Sh60,000.
According to police reports, Diana Mwende, one of the suspect tried to sell the baby to police officers posing as customers before being arrested.
Mlolongo Deputy County Commissioner Dennis Ongaga said the two were nabbed after police laid a trap following a tip-off from members of the public.
“Our officers posed as ordinary customers interested in the baby, managed to lure and arrest the two,” he said.

Thefts of babies have been on the rise in the area with investigations revealing a group of women who pose as house help before stealing babies for their business.
According to Ogaga, older women in their 30s use younger women to pose as desperate girls looking for house help jobs before fleeing with the babies.
The suspects are currently being held at Mlolongo Police Station and will be arraigned once investigations are complete.
The baby was taken by police and handed over to a rescue centre in Kitengela.
