Internal Security minister Katoo ole Metito says National Police Service Commission will now take over the process of recruiting the Inspector General of Police and his two deputies.
Mr Metito said the commission has the capacity and powers to carry out the mandate, which has stalled because of disagreements between the principals.
“It is good that the team is in place for now because it will start the process of recruiting the new police commanders as part of the police reforms,” he said.
However, the minister added that he does not know how soon the process may begin. Metito made the remarks when he officiated 617 motorbikes for chiefs and assistants at the Administration Police Training College in Nairobi on Friday.
He announced plans to purchase more vehicles, choppers and boats to enhance their police officers mobility. President Kibaki is now expected to appoint and publish in the Kenya Gazette the commission nominees following the approval by Parliament on Tuesday.
