As Mawimbi won the Horseman’s Cup at Nairobi Polo Club over the weekend, handicap 2 Amani Nzomo kept his star shining.

Besides him scoring crucial goals that enabled Mawimbi lift the title, he was also voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Mawimbi’s team of handicap 2 Nzomo, Fred Kambo (0.5), Michelle Morgan (-1) and Benjamin Moss (-1.5) overcame SBM Bank 6-4.5.

Morgan described Amani together with his elder brother Jadini as some of the top players in the country at the moment.

“Amani is an amazing player. Together with his brother Jadini (Nzomo), they are a fantastic team to play along with and a joy to watch,” Morgan told Standard Sports.

In-form Amani scored all the six goals to confirm his inclusion into Kenya's team that defeated Zimbabwe 5-3 at Manyatta Polo Club in Gilgil last month was not a fluke.

His experienced international elder brother Jadini (Nzomo) returned with a score of three of the four goals for SBM Bank after Karim Albany had earlier put through the first goal.

“It was a good match but it’s all teamwork that has made us win the title. I’m ready to do my best for the national team anytime,” Amani told Standard Sports.

As Amani scooped the (MVP) title, Jadini’s 12-year-old-pony christened ‘Island’ was voted as the Most Valuable Pony, the second time the Nzomo Ponies emerged victorious in a crucial tournament.

Last month, another of their pony christened ‘The Breaker’ rode by Zimbabwean BJ Bowen was voted as the Best Playing Pony (BPP) in the international match between Kenya and Zimbabwe in Gilgil.

Veuve Cliquot secured a narrow 5.5-5 win over Hennessy to win the Welby Cup, the lower division of the two-day-competition.

The two teams had been knocked-out of the senior competition by Mawimbi and SBM bank in their opening matches.
