Moi Girls Kamusinga dethroned as St Anthony’s retain boys’ hockey crown

Defending champions St Anthony Kitale successfully defended their title as the Brookside Term One games concluded at Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa yesterday.

St Anthony, also the reigning East Africa boys hockey title holders, needed shootouts to beat Friends Kamusinga School 1-0 after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

Lorgan Mabuka surged St Anthony ahead in the seventh minute before Geofrey Owino equalised for Kamusinga.

Cliff Limo put St Anthony ahead in the 51st minute with a good move. Gideon Mshindi put the scores level in the 57th minute.

During the flicks, Kamusinga missed all their penalties with Mathias Gularire scoring the winning flick for St Anthony to retain the title for the third year running.

“We played well and deserved the win,” St Anthonys coach Kevin Lugali said.

In girls hockey, St Cecilia Misikhu were crowned new champions after beating St John’s Kaloleni 2-1 in a battle of saints. Trans Nzoia Mixed won the title last year but were eliminated at the regional level.

Rachel Kamala surged Misikhu ahead in the 12th minute after she was fed by Rose Buyala. Evelyn Kasichana levelled in the 27th minute off Sophia Hassan’s cross pass.  Kamala completed her brace on the stroke of full time to give Misikhu the deserved win.

“It was a sweet victory. We played a strong side,” said Misikhu coach Silas Mango while his St Johns Kaloleni counterpart Austin Otieno said they did not convert the many chances that came along their.

“We gave our best luck was not on our side,” said Otieno.

In girls handball, newcomers Kirandich School were crowned girls handball champions after they dethroned immediate former champions Moi Girls Kamusinga.

The winners were technically superior as they went ahead to beat Kamusinga 17-13 in the closely constested final. Daisy Chemutai of Kirandich was voted the most valuable player.

Despite the defeat both teams including third-placed Sega who outclassed Kirigara 22-16 in the play-off, qualified for the East Africa games to be held in August in Arusha, Tanzania.

In boys handball, defending champions Kimilili successfully retained the title after beating newcomers Mbooni Boys 35-21 in the final.

Douglas Wekesa and Joseph Wafula tied with nine goals for Kimilil while Sidney Omondi and Richard Simiyu had 11 and three goals respectively for Mbooni who were making their debut in the games. Duncan Kimutai of Kimilil was the best player.

In play-off, Whitehouse School edged out Mangu High School 17-16.
