Safaricom shops to close for 4 hours on Thursday in honour of Bob Collymore

NAIROBI, KENYA: Safaricom shops will remain closed on Thursday to allow staff time to honour late Bob Collymore, a long serving Chief Executive Officer at the telecommunication company.

The shops will be closed for close to four hours from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm during a memorial service set for Nairobi’s All Saints Cathedral. Collymore passed away on July 1, 2019 at his Nairobi home after a long battle with cancer.

The cortege left Lee Funeral home on Tuesday with police escort, snaking its way through the city roads to Kariokor for cremation.

Following his death Safaricom Board has appointed Michael Joseph as an interim Chief Executive Officer.

A statement by company secretary Kathryne Maundu said Michael Joseph will assume the position with immediate effect after a special board meeting resolved so.

Mr Joseph is currently the Chairman of Kenya Airways and previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom.

Joseph, 73, a dual American and Kenyan national, who served as Safaricom’s CEO between July 2000 and November 2010, said he would stay in the post until the company finds a permanent replacement.
