From UFO sightings to theories about JFK’s assassination, YouTube is crammed full of conspiracy videos.

While YouTube used to promote many of these videos, that’s set to change.

A new report by the Washington Post has revealed that YouTube is changing its algorithm to stop promoting conspiracies and false information.

In a blog that is expected to be posted later today, YouTube will explain the new strategy, and how it can reduce the spread of content that ‘comes close to - but doesn’t quite cross the line.’

YouTube has been working on the change for six months, according to the report.

Initially, only English-language videos will be subjected to the new algorithm, meaning many conspiracy theories will slip through the net.

However, YouTube stressed that no videos are being deleted, they just won’t be promoted.

The blog added: “We think this change strikes a balance between maintaining a platform for free speech and living up to our responsibility to users.”
