Nakuru County: Two suspected gangsters were on Monday morning shot dead by police officers while robbing a petrol station at Kenlands Estate in Nakuru town.

Those gunned down were in the company of five others who escaped in a salon car.

The gangsters drove into a fuelling station posing as taxi operators in need of fuel.

According to petrol station manager John Mbugua, the gangsters then tied an attendant.

“After the cashier noticed their intention of robbery, he informed me,” said Mbugua, adding that he immediately called the police.

Threatened cashier

He said the gangsters threatened to kill the cashier by pouring petrol on him after he hesitated to hand over keys for the cash drawer and main office.

As they were ransacking the office, police officers arrived.

Nakuru police boss Bernard Kioko said his officers exchanged fire with the gangsters, killing two of them.

Kioko said a manhunt had been launched for the gangsters who escaped with bullet wounds.

He said they recovered a pistol, a homemade gun, 15 bullets and crude weapons.

The police boss appealed to the public and doctors to help in identifying criminals who escaped if they are spotted seeking for treatment.

The bodies of the gunned down gangsters were taken to Nakuru Municipal mortuary.
