Uwezo funds in MPs hands? No way, says women’s groups

By MERCY KAHENDA

Women’s groups in Nakuru County have rejected proposal to have MPs manage Uwezo funds.

The women said the funds will not benefit targeted groups if legislators oversee them because corruption could creep in. According to the Nakuru County Women Elders Peace Forum treasurer, Ann Njeri, there has been unfair allocation of bursaries and CDF that was under the management of MPs.

“The past government released bursaries and CDF but there are some regions lagging behind in development due to the unfair distribution of funds by MPs,” said Njeri.

She said the funds should be channelled to the Department of Gender and Social Services to benefit intended groups fairly. “The Uwezo fund is meant to support women and youths without any discrimination. If the money is managed by MPs, there is a high probability that they will award those who voted for them during the elections,” said Njeri.

She said the Department of Social Services has in the past managed the Women’s Enterprise Funds effectively.
