Pure luxury at poa place

Eldoret is certainly famous as the home of one of Kenya’s biggest legacies, athletics, with several training camps in the general area.

Wake up early enough and you might think there is a running bug going round from the number of people you meet huffing and puffing along in tights. Given this attraction the area has got several good hotels. Recently I visited to Poa Place Resort, at the junction of Eldoret-Nakuru road and Eldoret/KCC/Kaptagat road.

I spent a night at their excellent cottages, which I must add are great recreational places.

I would have expected this kind of accommodation in the famed safari lodges in our parks. My best location, however, was the Rock Bay bar and restaurant. From a far it resembled a group of rocks thrown together by Mother Nature peeping over the edge. But a closer scrutiny reveals windows of a carefully designed bar in the coal black surface. The uneven edges resemble a natural outcrop; only the windows betray the unique building. The restaurant is surrounded by water making it look like a floating restaurant.

This perfection is only spoilt by the Disc Jockey who needs a refresher course on mixing music. Most of the time he seemed unsure of what he was doing, or just lacked confidence. Any guest not familiar with the climate on this region is better warned to be arm themselves with warm attire, for it does get devilish

Cold at night.

Animal lovers have every reason to smile, for the resort boasts of a nature trail and with a variety of animals as well as a lay park on the property for a perfect family outing.

The prices for the cottages are, however, not everyone’s idea of loose change with the luxury cottages going for Sh7,000, the deluxe cottage for Sh10, 000 and the honeymoon cottage for sh12,000 all for bed and breakfast for residents.

And evidently Eldoret residents think of the place as a rich man’s joint. We went out for a drink in the evening and when looking for a taxi back all you had to do was mention Poa Place and the fare tripled.
