Concern as Sh8.5 billion Kisii-Isebani road project fall 16 months behind schedule

The construction of the Sh8.5 billion Isebania-Ahero highway is 16 months behind schedule due to delayed compensation of communities affected by the project, the contractor has said.

M/s China Henan International Corporation Group Limited said the total work completed up to September 2019 is estimated at only 31.56 per cent compared to the projected 76.44 per cent. The permanent work completed is 29 per cent way below the envisaged 76.24 per cent.

The company officials spoke as motorists complained of slow works on the road and the inconveniences caused by diversions.

According to the project resident engineer James Mageto, the delay has been caused by people affected by the project who were yet to be compensated to allow the works to proceed.

Yesterday, Eng Mageto said those demanding compensation are unwilling to move until they are given their money.

The contractor also said the Government owes him Sh600 million.

Should evaluate

On Wednesday, Mageto told the Presidential Delivery Unit led by Nyanza Regional Coordinator James Kianda that the contractor should evaluate his current needs and mobilise additional equipment accordingly.

“The contractor was forced to stop construction during and after the electioneering period due to violence. Heavy rains have occasionally affected progress given that most activities are still earthworks,” said Mageto.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Nyanza Regional Director Felix Osongo told the contractor not to carry out any demolitions but proceed with his work and leave the rest to his office.

National Land Commission Director Andrew Rotich was put to task to explain why they had taken time to compensate those affected by the project.

“We have done the report and forwarded it to the head office and shared it with KeNHA. We expect to have a final report in the next one week,” said Rotich.
