Chief linked to terrorist suspect questioned

BY HASSAN BARISA

Garissa, Kenya: The Anti Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) in Ijara, Garissa County arrested an assistant chief in connection to a woman linked to the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

The woman, from Somalia, was recently arrested in Nairobi with a false Kenyan ID card, which was recently issued in Hulugho.

The ATPU pounced on the administrator, Mohamed Jelle, at his home in Kora Hindi in Hulugho, following reports that he had aided the unidentified woman from Somalia to acquire a Kenyan ID card before she fled to Nairobi.

Mr Jelle was, allegedly, picked while holding a meeting with villagers and taken to the Ijara police station to record a statement.

Ijara OCPD Abdi Galogalo said an ATPU team from Nairobi is handling the case.

However, he confirmed that the CID officers freed the administrator after interrogation.

“Yes, its true the chief was arrested and made to record a statement and was released after he was booked in the OB,” Mr Galgalo told The Standard on telephone adding that he did not want to discuss Al-Shabaab.

Female suspect

But according to reliable sources, the administrator was detained after the female suspect was arrested in Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate in the ongoing security operation.

The chief’s family, speaking to The Standard claimed the administrator did not return to his family immediately after interrogation, and disputed reports that he had been freed.

Omar Bule, a relative claimed police were harassing an innocent man.

He alleged that an assistant chief is not responsible for issuing ID cards adding that the process involves the National Intelligence Services (NIS) and Immigration officers.

But the OCPD insisted that the chief was released immediately after interrogation.
