Families to get title deeds over Sh19 billion Thiba mega dam

After a long wait, families whose land was acquired by the Government to give room for the construction of the Thiba mega dam in Kirinyaga County, will this Thursday be issued with title deeds for the alternative settlement they have been offered.
The 73 families are set to be settled at Ndomba and Gathigiriri areas in Mwea East Sub-County, where basic infrastructure has already been put in place.
Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa is expected to preside over the issuance of the deeds at Ngekenyi Chief's camp, just about a kilometre from the proposed dam site.
The project Implementation Officer Julius M'ruchiu said arrangements to have the families settled have been finalized and the necessary disturbance allowances paid.
''The move now signifies that the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Sh 19 billion dam will take place any time now,'' M'ruchiu said.
The dam site covers 560 acres held in 253 registered land parcels owned by 709 households most of whom have since been compensated in cash or moved to settlement areas of their choice.
The officer however said this group will lose small chunks of their land where the canals will pass through and the families will not be required to relocate but have since received compensation for the portions.
The project is among the Vision 2030 projects that the Jubilee Administration is implementing ahead of the general elections as contained in its 2013 pre-election manifesto.
