A 35-year-old police officer attached to the elite presidential escort unit has died after shooting himself in the head inside GSU Recce Squad’s camp on Kenyatta Road, Kiambu County.

The officer identified as Samuel Ngatia allegedly shot himself with a pistol in his house .

According to Juja Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Richard Mwaura,it is not yet known when the officer shot himself but his body was found on Monday, April 11.

“This is a matter of national security, I can only confirm that it is true that there was such an incident, but the investigations are being handled by another office,” Mwaura told The Standard.

According to a police report filed at Kays Police Station in Juja under the OB Number 09/11/04/2022, the presidential escort unit boss on Kenyatta Road camp reported that Ngatia had fatally shot himself in the head.

Police, who accessed his house, moved his body to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home.

Authorities said Ngatia fired a bullet in the right side of his head.

A Jericho pistol, 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition, another magazine with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and a submachine gun with 30 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Juja DCI boss Richard Mwaura told The Standard that the deceased, Samuel Ngatia, was attached to Deputy President William Ruto’s official security outfit.

Ngatia leaves behind two children and an estranged wife who he unofficially parted with two years ago.
