Nairobi, Kenya: The East African Bribery Index 2013 has ranked the Kenya Police on top of the list of institutions most affected by bribery in Kenya.

Lands services and Judiciary ranked second and third respectively, in the annual survey conducted by Transparency International (TI).

Other institutions included in the report are Registry & Licensing services and City & local councils which were ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

The survey indicates bribery is still very rampant in the country.

According the report, only 7% of Kenyans would report cases of bribery with some arguing that it is the only way to get services fast.

Others expressed no optimism that any action would be taken once they reported the cases.

“For respondents who reported to have paid a bribe, majority (36%) said they paid bribes to hasten up service. 26% reported to have paid a bribe because they felt that paying bribes was the only way to access service, 18% paid a bribe to avoid trouble with authorities while 11% paid a bribe because it was expected,” read a press release from TI.

In the East African region, Kenya ranked fourth with Uganda being the most affected country. Rwanda is the least affected country at fifth position as Burundi and Tanzania ranked second and third respectively.
