Lawyer hits out at politicians over Waki list

KENYA: A leading lawyer has dismissed calls by politicians for the release of the names on the Waki list, saying that only the ICC could release them.

Lawyer Betty Murungi further explained that the release of the names would not change the outcome of the on-going cases at the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC).

MPs and senators from the Jubilee Alliance have called for release of all names in the famous envelope, arguing the real culprits were never taken to ICC.

“The calls for the release of the names are ill-timed and of no use to the country as the government had the chance to act but it failed to,” she said. According to her, the government had 105 days to form a special tribunal after the report by the Commission of Inquiry into Post-Election Violence, but this was never done.

“The list of suspects was handed over to the Kofi Annan panel, which later handed the names to ICC,” Murungi recounted.

She termed the calls political, just like the attempt by MPs and senators to have Kenya withdraw from the ICC. She was speaking to journalists during an on-going women’s forum.
