Uchumi Supermarket was yesterday restrained by a court from continuing with plans to lay off workers.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court gave the order pending the hearing and determination of a suit filed by the Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers.

Lady Justice Linet Ndolo issued the order after the union filed the application to contest the sackings following closure of five branches of the supermarket.

The union wanted the court to restrain Uchumi from declaring the targeted 253 employees redundant. The case will be heard on April 5.
