KENYA: Inflation rate rose to 6.02 per cent in July 2013 from 4.91 per cent in June 2013.

According to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the inflation rate is attributed to upsurge in the cost of utilities.

“The Consumer Price Indices (CPI) increased by 0.2 per cent from 139.59 in June 2013 to 139.87 in July 2013,” said the report.

The affected utilities include: food and non-alcoholic drinks, housing, water, electricity, gas and transport.

Between June and July 2013, food and non-alcoholic decreased by 0.10 per cent due to total falls that outweighed rises in the average prices of various food items.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose by 0.13 per cent index. This was as a result of surge in house rent and charcoal cost. Transport index rose by 0.98 per cent due to increase on the pump prices of petrol and diesel.

The health index also rose by 0.95 per cent due to increase in doctor’s charges and some medicine.
