Kenya has sent a protest note to Uganda following the killing of Kenyan students at Makerere University in Kampala.

Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetang’ula said the Government had communicated "very firmly" to Uganda and demanded Kampala assures security of the more than 40,000 Kenyans studying there.

"There is clear indication this was a criminal act involving the reckless use of a gun by a watchman," said Mr Wetang’ula adding: "But if the evidence points to collusion we will deal with the matter."

He said the Government had pressed for investigation into the shootings. The Kenya High Commissioner in Kampala has been instructed to follow the matter so that the deceased’s families are informed of developments.

Meanwhile, a sombre mood engulfed Shipalo village in Shinyalu after news went round that one of the shot students was from the area.

Villagers trooped to Oscar Luvasia’s homestead to console the family following the shooting of Brian Amuoga.

Amuoga was a first year Bachelor of Law student at the university.

The other victim was Ignatius Nyongesa, a third year Commerce student.

Amuoga’s mother Violet Luvasia remained speechless for the better part of yesterday, as relatives and friends visited the home to console the family. Violet was alone at home as other family members had travelled to Uganda.

She said she was yet to come to terms with the loss of her son, the first born in a family of five.

Conflicting report

"All I know is that my son is dead. The circumstances leading to his death are still unclear," she said.

She said they learnt about the incident on Monday after midnight.

"After the shooting, we kept calling every hour until he died at about 11am the following day," she said.

She remembered how Amuoga’s colleague told her that her son was in good condition only for the doctors to give her a conflicting report.

"I was first told that he was shot in the hand, but when I called the hos pital doctors told me my son was undergoing an intense operation," she added.

The shooting is reported to have occurred following a scuffle between two rival guild presidential candidates at God is Able Hostel.

Another student, Amon Mugezi, a Ugandan, is in critical condition.
