Higher Education minister William Ruto has expressed confidence that Kenyans will reject the Proposed Constitution on August 4.

Mr Ruto insisted that the contentious issues in the document should be amended first before being subjected to a referendum.

"We are not opposing the Proposed Constitution but we want some clauses to be amended so we have a constitution being supported by every Kenyan," he said.

The minister was speaking at Kisima Cha Neema Church in Kisauni to drum up support for the ‘No’ campaigns.

The church’s bishop Mary Kagendo, Belgut MP Charles Keter, Kuria MP Wilfred Machage, former Kisauni MP Ananiah Mwaboza and former Malindi MP Lucas Maitha accompanied Ruto.

God’s wishes

He claimed the document was against biblical teaching.

"I know we have looked for a constitution for many years but there should be no hurry to adopt a document that is against God’s wishes," said Ruto.

The minister asked Christians to remain stable and reject the document.

Maitha commended church leaders for standing up against the Proposed Constitution because they were blamed in 2008 for failing to give guidance to their flock, which led to post-election violence.

"I am happy that this time round church leaders have come out to oppose what they deem dangerous for this country unlike in 2008 when they did not say anything as Kenyans were killing one another," said Maitha.

Machage claimed the new laws could deprive Coast people of their right to own land.
