A hotel worker suspected of stealing cash from her employer has been charged in court.

Silvanah Wanjiru Waithira was charged with stealing more than Sh16 million at Safari Park Hotel.

Ms Wanjiru was said to have had gone underground for more than three months before she was arrested and brought to court.

She was charged with conspiracy to steal the cash by backdating cash payment invoices at the hotel between April 7, 2016 and December 24, 2016.

It is alleged she and others not before court falsely pretended that the proceeds of the payment had already been submitted to the hotel management, thus making away with a sum of Sh3,740,421.

Her other colleagues were arraigned at Makadara Law Courts in March this year, but Wanjiru had allegedly been on the run since then.

The other three, IT supervisor George Gatura and cashiers Anne Aketch and Caroline Wangui, allegedly stole Sh2.2m between April 16 and July 2 last year.

Gatura and Wangui were further charged that between April 28 and November 29 last year, at the same place, they stole over Sh2.5m from the hotel, which came to their possession by virtue of their employment to the hotel.

Like her counterparts, Wanjiru denied the charges and was released on a Sh500,000 cash bail or a Sh1 million bond. The case will be mentioned on August 15.
