Investors in the tourism industry have called on politicians to preach peace, conduct peaceful elections and accept the outcome.

Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) chairman, Mr Mohamed Hersi, said politicians had so far demonstrated maturity.

“We applaud Kenyans for conducting themselves peacefully during the campaign period and hope that they will continue to uphold peace during and after the General Election,” said Hersi.

“Please campaign on issues and not whip up ethnic emotions. It is our modest hope and faith that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) shall conduct a free, fair and credible election.”

On his part, Mr Hasnain Noorani, CEO and managing director of Pride Group of Hotels, said: “You should hold your respective supporters and or party members accountable to ensure a free and fair election.”

He added that it was upto Kenyans to show the world true patriotism. Noorani said that by holding peaceful elections, Kenyans will be telling the world that the country should be their destination of choice when thinking tourism, leisure and investment.

Lake Bogoria Resort & Spa general manager, Ms Lydia Dentewo, said international tourist arrivals could easily be disrupted in the event of a chaotic election. “For our part, we have the flamingos and hot geyser (springs) attractions which have endeared many international visitors to visit the country. As we talk, there are increased bookings this month and projections for August are also looking good,” said Dentewo.

Saiwa Holidays managing director, Mr Paul Kurgat, challenged IEBC to conduct a credible, fair and peaceful election.

“The past has never been good to talk about, and we presume you (IEBC) want a good legacy. Kenyans are optimistic that the IEBC will live up to its mandate and meet expectations. The world expects credible elections and Kenyans want peace,” said Kurgat.
