Moi urges vigilance on public funds

Retired President Moi has urged wananchi to monitor use of public funds.

Mr Moi said this would curb misuse of funds and ensure public funds, such as the Constituencies Development Funds (CDF), benefit the needy in society.

He decried poor standards of education in public schools and urged MPs to use CDF to educate children from poor backgrounds in middle level colleges and universities.

The former Head of State, while calling for investment in road construction and repairs noted that poor roads in the North Rift region had led to farmers and businessmen incurring huge losses, as they cannot transport their produce and goods to markets in time.

On the draft constitution, he said many structures of governance would be expensive to maintain and would be an added strain to the taxpayer.

He explained: "We do not have additional sources of income and there are persistent problems relating to unemployment and population explosion facing the country."

Consultative meeting

The former president was speaking at the weekend during the burial of former Nzoia County Council Chairman Joseph Kiptabut Chebii in Kachebora village.

Speaking at the same function, Cherangany MP Joshua Kuttuny said ODM MPs from Rift Valley would visit Moi to consult on various issues affecting the region.

"We respect Moi irrespective of our political and party affiliation. We (MPs) are soon going to pay him a visit," Mr Kuttuny said.

He said the leaders would consult Moi as they chart a new political course for residents of the vast, voter rich and cosmopolitan province.

Kuttuny said leaders from the region would not allow the Government to repossess a tea estate and factory at Kiptagich in Olenguruone associated with the retired president.

"Why is the State keen on repossessing the estate owned by Moi along the Mau Forest yet it is environmentally friendly and provides employment to more than 10,000 people?" he posed.
