Police hold two over links with foreigners

Detectives in Mombasa raided a house in Nyali and arrested two people on suspicion they had links with 300 illegal immigrants.

The foreigners are believed to have sneaked into the country.

A relative of one suspect confirmed police arrested his brother for questioning.

Mr Hussein Ali told The Standard at Coast Provincial Police Headquarters that anti-terrorism police officers were holding his brother.

"My brother is being questioned over claims he is harbouring some foreigners in his house," said Ali.

Police officers confirmed holding two suspects, but told reporters their (officers’) seniors would brief them.

But a senior officer in charge of the unit only spoke to the family of the suspects, assuring them their relatives would be released.

However, by noon on Sunday, the suspects had not been released from police custody.

During the raid, Ali said, the police officers took away the suspect’s laptop and mobile phone.

But he commended the officers for professional conduct during the raid, saying they produced a search warrant and requested permission to move into the building.
