Raila Odinga beats William Ruto in the battle for Nairobi parliamentary seats

Sakaja takes over the reins of the capital city with his deputy Njoroge Muchiri after they garnered 699,392 votes against Igathe's 573,516 votes.

ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna won the Senate seat after he garnered 716,876 votes to defeat his close opponent Margaret Wanjiru of UDA who managed 524,091 votes.

ODM's Esther Passaris emerged the winner in the tight Woman Representative race, after garnering 698,929 votes against Millicent Omanga of UDA who came second with 586,246.

However, Ruto and Raila are headed for a vicious battle for control of the Nairobi county assembly after Kenya Kwanza and Azimio tied in the number of MCAs at 35 each.

The election for Utawala ward in the Embakasi East constituency was suspended following the death of candidate Michael Mwathi.

Speaking after receiving his certificate from the IEBC Nairobi county Returning Officer Albert Gogo at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi, Sakaja promised to revert county functions that were handed over to the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS). "I thank the people of Nairobi for giving me the mandate to lead the county with my deputy," he said.

"I thank Mohamed Badi for the work they have done in the city despite the challenges. I have learnt from them but I want to affirm that from the day we are sworn in all the functions of the county government shall revert to the county government."

The outgoing Nairobi senator braved the storm over his academic qualifications to stay firmly in the governor race.

He takes over from Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu who was sworn in after the impeachment of Mike Sonko. Nairobi has 2,415,310 registered voters.
