Armed robbers steal Sh2.3 million from Prime Bank in Nakuru

Five armed robbers raided Prime Bank Nakuru Branch on Wednesday evening and made away with Sh2.3 million.

According to Suraj Rawal, the branch manager at Westside Mall on Kenyatta Avenue, the five forcefully entered the banking hall at around 4.30pm while armed with a homemade gun, hammer, knives and a machete.

Rawal reported the matter at Nakuru Police Station at 6.32 pm and the police report was booked under OB number 98/26/1/2022.

According to him, the CCTV footage showed one of the guards who opened the main door for the suspects.

“They went straight to the rear banking hall where they held nine staff hostage before commandeering them to the toilets and locked them inside,” reads the report.

Rawal reported that the attackers vandalised the drawers and took money estimated at Sh2.3 million.

According to the report seen by The Standard on of the tellers was hit with a hammer and injured on the head.

He was rushed to Aga khan hospital for treatment and discharged in fair condition, the report reads.

Police who visited the scene recovered a homemade gun, one hammer, mobile phone make Huawei and Sh1,000 note.

“The scene was visited by top officers within the county. Police are tracking the suspects,” concludes the report.

Nakuru County Commander Beatrice Kiraguri confirmed the incident and said that investigations have been launched by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Ms Kiraguri said the guard suspected to have helped the robbers gain access is at large.

“The CCTV shows the guard working together with the thugs after which he ran away,” said Ms Kiraguri through a text message.
