Mombasa detectives nab suspects in car theft ring

 

Mombasa-based detectives have detained three suspects linked to a car theft syndicate operating in the Coastal region. The three were nabbed in Kilifi and Kajiado counties yesterday.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three have been stealing cars from unsuspecting owners by posing as customers seeking to hire their motor vehicles. A Toyota Axio believed to have been stolen two months ago was also recovered during the arrest.

“[We are] pursuing a case where the victim hired his KCT 250T Toyota Axio on July 26, 2020, to one of the suspects, George Morara Aboki for three days. …detectives established that the syndicate was tampering with the car tracking gadgets before disposing of them in Tanzania via the Namanga border,” the DCI tweeted.

“In the intelligence-led operation, 42-yr-old John Kimani and Pacificah Kemunto Nyakundi aged 39yrs were also arrested being accomplices of the 50-yr-old George Morara,” the DCI added.

The three are in police custody awaiting to be charged on Monday.

Elsewhere, the detectives in Mombasa also arrested another suspect in connection with a robbery incident in Nyali yesterday. According to the DCI, suspect identified as Boris Malai is answerable to the incident in which items were stolen from a car in the parking lot.

The detectives tweeted: “Following credible information from members of the public, a team of detectives lead by the CCIO Mombasa has arrested Boris Mutua Malai from his home in Kiembeni and recovered a Toyota Ractis.”

“The motor vehicle was captured on camera on 17/9/2020 bearing plate number KCU 113 P at a crime scene at Texas Building near Cinemax within Nyali where a car was broken into and valuables stolen from therein. Search for Mutua's accomplices is ongoing.”
