Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua on Wednesday April 8 announced special allowances for health workers doing over time and extra duties during the coronavirus pandemic.

Through a statement, the Machakos boss said that the workers will be given extra allowance of Sh20,000, Sh10,000 and Sh5,000 per month depending on their duties.

Mutua says that the Sh20,000 allowance will be given to the health professionals who are part of the Machakos Covid-19 Surveillance team.

The Sh10,000 allowance will go to the non-professional surveillance team members while supportive health worker cadres will receive the Sh5,000 allowance.

According to the governor, these allowances will be effective April 1, and will last a period of three months.

Mutua says these allowances are a way to show support to the health workers and appreciate them for the work they are doing during the pandemic.

“The allowances we are giving our health workers are just a token of appreciation based on what we can afford so as to show them that we care and we will continue supporting them and ensuring we have the right equipment, commodities and environment to keep them safe,” says Mutua.

Aside from the allowances, the governor said they were looking for alternatives to pay the county employees’ salaries which have been delayed.

“I wish to assure all Machakos County Employees that my Government is finding alternative ways to pay salaries because there has been a delay in Treasury and no salaries of government employees has been paid anywhere in Kenya,” added Mutua.
