Kisumu residents protest over delayed Sh100m road project

Residents and traders have protested delayed completion of the Sh100 million Nyamasaria-Manyatta-Magadi road in Kisumu.

Construction of the road ought to have been completed in November last year but the contract period was extended to February due to delayed release of funds.

The February deadline too has elapsed, but a spot check has revealed that only some sections of the road have been tarmacked.

Traders said the delayed completion of the road, which links them to Kibuye market, Manyatta and Kondele was making them spend more. They have to go all the way to Nyamasaria to access the markets.

Travel costs

Mary Omollo said the road, when fully tamarked, would minimise travel costs and give traders quick access to local markets.

City Engineer Kevin Ajul said the contract period was extended after heavy rainfall interfered with construction works.

"The rains interfered with work. Then there was a two-month lapse when Directorate of Criminal Investigations instituted investigations into Kisumu Urban Project," he said.

Yesterday, physical checks on the road revealed the drainage system had not been concluded.

Area MCA Omondi Olwal called for speedy completion of the project to save residents time and money.
