Siaya Payroll clerk barred from office over Sh1.3 million alleged fraud

A Siaya County official charged with stealing Sh1.3 million has been barred from accessing his office.

Harold Omondi, a payroll clerk, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Julius Ngar Ngar. He was charged alongside Dennis Odhiambo, who is not an employee of the county government. They were released on a Sh500,000 bond.

Prosecutor Mokaya Nyakundi withdrew an additional charge Odhiambo faced for receiving funds despite not being an employee of the county government.

According to the charge sheet, Omondi allegedly included Odhiambo in the payroll as an employee of the county government. Consequently, they obtained Sh1.3 million.

The crimes allegedly took place between September 16, 2018, and September 25, 2019.

During the proceedings, the prosecutor asked the court to issue orders barring the payroll clerk from accessing his office arguing that he could interfere with the case.

The magistrate directed the duo to be reporting to the Siaya Directorate of Criminal Investigations office once a week.
