GSU officer arrested after allegedly kidnapping Malindi Safaricom employee

A police constable is among two suspects arrested in Mombasa after they allegedly abducted an official from a mobile service provider in Malindi.

The policeman was arrested on Friday afternoon and the alleged victim freed following her abduction earlier that afternoon.

The suspect, who is based at a GSU camp in Baringo County, had allegedly abducted the Safaricom employee in Malindi in a suspected loan recovery mission, the police said.

On Saturday, Mombasa DCI boss Anthony Muriithi said the suspects are being held at Central police station pending investigations.

“We have three suspects in custody, including an officer. This is a serious crime,’’ he said.

The suspects claimed the abducted woman victim had taken a Sh500,000 loan from one of her abductors but failed to repay the money as agreed.

The suspects then decided to seek police assistance. The GSU officer ambushed and forced the victim into a private car before driving towards Mombasa from Malindi.

DCI officers from Malindi and Mombasa trailed the abductors following a tip off.

The suspects, on sensing they were being trailed, drove themselves to Central police station in Mombasa where they were arrested. “The suspects opted to avoid confrontation with police officers and drove into the station,” said a police source.

Mr Muriithi said the suspects will be arraigned in court on Monday. The car they were driving in was also detained.
