Ward reps vow to defy Elachi order on sittings

More drama is expected at the Nairobi County Assembly on Tuesday after ward reps vowed to defy the indefinite suspension of proceedings by Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

This comes even as the Jubilee-allied ward reps rejected Governor Mike Sonko’s nominee Majority Leader Mark Ndungu.

Jubilee Party County Assembly Majority Chief Whip Chege Waithera yesterday told The Standard that plenary sittings would resume on Tuesday, dismissing the suspension issued by Elachi last week as unprocedural.

Last Wednesday, Elachi (pictured) suspended assembly sittings indefinitely following a dispute over her return.

The assembly was the scene of violent confrontations last week as Elachi forced her way back on the strength of a court order.

Elachi has recorded a statement with the police over the chaos that rocked City Hall on Wednesday. She wants police to take action on those who destroyed property and assaulted her together with her supporters.

A team of detectives visited City Hall on Friday to access damages.

Police said they are also investigating claims some licensed gun holders fired shots during the chaos.
