Victor Mwendwa, a KFS ranger recovering after an attack

A Kenya Forest Service Ranger deployed in the Maasai Mau Forest Restoration Operation is recovering at the Narok Cottage Hospital following an attack late Friday Afternoon.

The ranger, Victor Mwendwa sustained an arrow injury in his left thigh when their patrol team was ambushed by a group of about 50 persons armed with crude weapons.

The patrol team repulsed the attackers who had dug trenches across the road leading to their Olposimoru South Camp also known as Kass FM.

Further action on the matter is being taken by the relevant authorities.

The KFS together with other Government Law Enforcement Agencies and partners are committed to undertaking the Maasai Mau Forest Restoration Operation in a human rights-based approach and, to ensure restoration of the depleted forest.

In a statement to the newsroom, Kenya Forest Service said the confrontation ensued for about half an hour on Friday after which the attackers retreated into the thick forest leaving one officer with a lodged arrow at his thigh.

“KFS salutes the injured Ranger and stands with all its Rangers across the country - they are our conservation heroes. Just like any other Kenyan, Forest Rangers are our brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers,”

“The only difference is, they put their lives on the line, to do the noble duty of protecting our forests to ensure that the lives and livelihoods of all Kenyans are guaranteed for the survival of the current and future generations,” noted KFS Chief Conservator Julius Kamau

A middle-aged man suspected to have shot a Kenya Forest Service (KFS) ranger with an arrow was charged before a Narok court on Monday.

Joel Kipyego alias Chuck Norri denied causing grievous bodily harm to KFS officer Victor Mwendwa on October 4, 2019, at Kipchoge area in Narok South.

His plea to be released on bail/bond bore no fruits after Chief Magistrate Wilbroda Juma ordered his detention for three more days to allow police complete investigation.

The case will be heard on November 1 this year.
