Girl hangs herself after being scolded over poor performance in exams.

Three people in Embu County, among them a Class Five girl who was allegedly reprimanded over poor performance in exam, have committed suicide in a span of 12 hours.

12-year-old Grace Gatwiri, disappeared on Wednesday after being scolded on Tuesday evening over bad grades only for her body to be found on Wednesday dangling on a tree.

Confirming the incident, Kiamuringa sub-location assistant chief Ronald Njue said the girl became moody and looked affected by the scolding.

Njue said the girl left home for school on Wednesday morning, she carried a sisal rope and used it to play with other friends the whole day before retreating to a secluded place where he hanged herself.

“When the school closed in the evening, she separated herself from her friends and went to a secluded place where she climbed a tree and hanged herself,’’ said the chief.

Her body was found dangling on a tree near their home.

The administrator said the girl had left a note which was taken by the police officers who collected her body.

He cautioned parents against scolding children, saying what the pupil needed was guidance and not scolding.

“Parents should avoid scolding their children heavily on accounts of poor performance or any other mistakes. They should guide them with love and passion to feel they are valued so as to avoid such an incident,” said the assistant chief.

Area police boss Kere Murilo said they received information at around 9am on Thursday about the incident and sent the officers to the scene who ollected the body.

Elsewhere, the body of a 36-year-old woman Morgan Karimi was found hanging in her house in Kianjuki Sub-location at around 8pm on Thursday in what is suspected to be suicide.

Murilo said the woman’s 11-year-old son arrived home to find his mother dangling from roof rafters.

He said they are investigating the three incidents while police took the three bodies to the Embu Level Five Hospital Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

“We are concerned about the rising cases of suicides in the county. We wonder if people are overwhelmed by problems but we advise residents to always share their challenges with those who can assist them like religious leaders, family members, counsellors instead of taking their own lives," said Murilo.
