Kudos basketball Morans on rare feat

The national basketball men team plays the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) today in the finals of the Fiba AfroCan tournament in Mali. The Kenyan Morans beat Morocco 96-66 in the semi-finals on Thursday evening to set a date with DRC who knocked out Angola 84-78 in their semi-final tie. Enroute to the finals, the Kenyans had beaten other top basketball nations like Tunisia, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

The last time the Kenyan men team participated in the Africa Championship was in 1993 in Kasarani, where they lost to Senegal in the semis, but to see them back on top in the continent is good news for sports in Kenya. While we will cheer on the Kenyans to beat the Congolese today, their show in Mali has shown us that all our sports teams need support to bring glory to Kenya.

National volleyball team Malkia Strikers also reached the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt early this month only to lose to well-funded Cameroon team which also received Sh35 million this week from their president for beating the Kenyans.

Back home, all Malkia Strikers got was a tweet from the ministry, not forgetting that they went to Egypt with little funding and no allowances while Harambee Stars got Sh240 million ahead of the Nations Cup, Sh420m was injected into Safari Rally and Kenya Open golf also got Sh253 million from the government. After what the Kenyan Morans have done, it is a wake-up call to the Sports Ministry and the government that Kenyan sport is not only about Safari Rally, Kenyan Open and Harambee Stars. All teams need our support. Go Morans go.
