A police officer today was arrested for shooting a 34-year-old man dead on Thursday night.

The officer, attached to Itumbe Police Station, is said to have entered Maximum Pub at Itumbe market, less than 400 metres from the station, and shot Dominic Oyunge on the thigh, killing him on the spot.

Oyunge was working as a guard at the bar after he abandoned boda bdoa business a few days ago.

Kisii County Criminal Investigations Commander James Kipsoi confirmed the incident, saying they were going to take the suspect to court later yesterday to seek more days to carry out further investigations.

“The suspect is in our custody and we expect him to appear in court,” said Kiposi.

Peter Mokua, a boda boda rider who was in the bar at the time of the incident, said the officer entered the premise at around 10.20pm and threatened to kill everybody within the premises.

“He aimed the gun at Oyunge and shot him once,” said Mokua.

The suspect is said to have been deployed to the station from the GSU recently.

The deceased’s parents, Pius Otumbi and Alexinah Gesare, said they only came to know about their son’s death through other villagers who were wailing outside the compound.
