Elevation of Matiang’i not meant to curtail powers of DP Ruto, say leaders

Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni

MPs have dismissed claims that the elevation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i was meant to curtail the powers of Deputy President William Ruto.

Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni (right) defended President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to expand Dr Matiang'i's mandate, saying he had a right to organise the Government.

"Let us not read politics in the changes. The President has a duty to govern and he knows how best to do it," said Mr Kioni.

South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi said the Tuesday's Executive Order showed Uhuru was keen on leaving a great legacy. "He is reorganising the Executive to have a better coordinated team that will deliver results".

Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood said: "My thinking is Dr Matiang'i is still subordinate to the DP even as he performs his Cabinet roles."

Some Gusii leaders said Uhuru's order was not political but only meant to enhance efficiency in Government.

"There has been so much goodwill after the handshake. The President only wants to ensure equitable development and better delivery of services," said Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri.

Kisii Woman Rep Janet Ongera said: "It was wise to add him (Matiang'i) duties because of his efficiency. His record at the Education ministry was unparalleled.” [
