High school teacher killed, six students hurt in separate accidents

A high school teacher died on the spot and six students are receiving treatment following two accidents in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Gilbert Tarus, a Physics teacher at Marakwet Boys’ High School was hit by a speeding car in a hit and run incident along the Iten-Eldoret Road on Thursday night.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Kenneth Kimani said police have launched a hunt for the owner of the car that knocked the teacher. Mr Kimani said the deceased’s body, who was last spotted at a local bar in Iten on Thursday evening was found on the roadside by motorists at around 5am yesterday.

“We are investigating the incident even as we urge pedestrians and motorists to observe caution on the roads during this time when schools are reopening and many people returning to work,” Kimani said.

In the second incident, six students travelling to various schools in Baringo County are recuperating at Iten County Referral Hospital in Elgeyo Marakwet after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in a road accident on the sloppy Iten-Tambach Road yesterday.

According to the police commander, the matatu driver lost control of the vehicle that rolled several times off a sharp bent, moments after leaving Iten town.

“Three other students were treated and discharged but the six are still in hospital,” said Kimani.
